A nicely starched and folded napkin adds an elegant touch to a beautifully set table. Here are a few uncomplicated napkin folding techniques. All napkin folding instructions are illustrated with little images.
THE BISHOPS HAT
The underside of the napkin should face upwards.
Fold the napkin in half bringing the bottom edge to the top edge.
Take the top left corner and the bottom left corner and fold them diagonally into the middle.
Turn the napkin over and then around so that the top right corner now lies in the bottom left.
Fold in half from the middle upwards, and un-tuck the underlying triangle.
Take the right corner and fold it to the left, tucking it under the large triangle.
Take the left side and fold it back, again tucking it under the triangle at the back.
THE TRIAD
The underside of the napkin should face upwards with one corner pointing downwards (i.e. a rhombus shape).
Fold the bottom corner up onto the opposite corner.
Fold the right and left corners precisely in towards the top corner.
Fold the bottom peak up towards the top peak, leaving a rim of 2 or 3 cm. Then fold the peak back towards the bottom edge.
Fold the corners backwards and tuck into each other at the back.
At the front, peal the two long peaks right down.
THE STRELITZIE, THE SWAN
The underside of the napkin should face upwards
Fold the napkin in half bringing the top edge to the bottom edge.
Fold in half again, this time from right to left.
Take the open corners at the bottom left and fold them to meet the opposite corner.
Fold the two sides into the middle so that bottom corners form points again.
Fold these bottom corners so that they bend backwards and press firmly together.
Fold the sides to the back, with one on top of the other and press together.
Pull up the first four corners.
THE DINNER JACKET
The underside of the napkin should face upwards with one corner pointing downwards
Fold the bottom corner up onto the opposite corner
Make a 2-3 cm wide folded edge, folding upwards from the bottom.
Take hold of the two corners and flip the napkin over, so that the peak of the triangle faces downwards. Then take the two side corners and fold them in down towards the peak.
Fold the sides to the back.
Tuck the bottom end underneath and your top-notch dinner jacket is complete! Decorate with ribbon or a bow tie.
THE KINGS HAT
The underside of the napkin should face upwards.
Fold the napkin in half bringing the bottom edge to the top edge.
Fold in half again from right to left.
Take the bottom right corner and fold upwards, (but not completely in half).
Take the side corners, bend them backwards and tuck them into each other
Take the front peak and fold it downwards to make a small pocket to hold small decorative pieces.
THE LOTUS FLOWER
The underside of the napkin should face upwards.
Take each corner in turn and fold into the centre.
Again fold all the corners into the centre.
Turn the napkin over and once more fold all the corners into the centre.
Pull out the tips. Start with the tips under the corners and then pull out the rest.
